A question that many people with seniors pets ask themselves is, “do I really need older dog insurance?” and the answer to that question is, of course, always open to discussion and interpretation depending on how you look at things. To make an extremely long story short, yes, it's always worth having this type of policy, especially on your older dog because it can mean the difference between life and death for your pet in times of tough financial situations. If you haven't had a chance to yet, you should take the time to visit some of the bigger companies who have websites on insurance for older dogs, this way you can start to get a feel for what these types of policies are all about and what they can offer and do for both you and your pet.

Do You Need Older Dog Insurance?

In my opinion, every individual who owns a dog, especially one of age, needs to have a form of older dog insurance on them. The benefits for having to pay a non-substantial monthly are in themselves worth every penny to your pet. The only thing to keep in mind is that many older dog pet insurance companies will not directly pay your veterinarian their portion of the bills, instead, you may be required to front the cost of the entire bill before the insurance companies pays you the fee they owe you – this is the only main problem people seem to have with this type of insurance.

If you can look past this tiny little point and can financially handle it, then you can expect these types of providers to reimburse up to 70-90% of your total veterinarian care bill right back to you. The benefits of having the protection of such a policy on your side often makes all of the difference in saving the lives of a countless number of pets each year.

Older Dog Insurance Policies

Depending on who your older dog insurance provider is, you can expect that each and every single provider of this insurance will have unique policies and many of them have the ability to be “customized” in a way that best meets your needs. If you visit the websites of many of these providers you'll see that you can often add and remove different types of coverage to your policy, however, most of these companies have 3 or 4 different standard levels of coverage in order to make things much easier and understandable.

Older dog health care is important to the overall happiness and longevity of your pets life and so it is important to select a level of coverage that you know will bring the maximum amount of protection to your pet. Selecting any cheap plan just to have is going to be the fastest way to run into trouble whenever your pet gets sick so it is important to take the time and study all of the different optional plans you can choose from. If you have any questions, making use of the customer service resources available to you on the websites of these providers will help you to enter a deeper level of understanding when trying to figure out which course of action you should take.

Old dog insurance is something every pet should have the luxury of being confidently protected by. There's no reason not to make the investment into such a type of insurance; the company you select to protect your pet makes ALL of the difference. Take as much time as necessary to review and research whatever company you plan on using to take out your older dog insurance policy from.

I think that having pet insurance for an older dog is a good idea. Just because I think that having an older pet can be prone to diseases and illnesses and although majority of the companies do not cover pre-existing conditions, I think it is still a very good idea.

Older pets inevitably develop chronic diseases e.g. diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, thyroid disease, etc. if they live long enough. Many of these diseases are treatable allowing the pet to survive months to years longer with few symptoms and a good quality of life. There will be costs on the front end of diagnosing and initial treatment. Then, there may be daily medication and periodic laboratory testing to check progress, etc. This can be expensive - especially over the long-haul. So, pet insurance can really be helpful.

When choosing a pet insurance company, you want to make sure that you get a policy that covers chronic conditions. Some companies cover these problems in their base policy. Others have add-on riders that you can purchase to add such coverage. It really boils down to which company offers the broadest coverage for the best price.

The premiums for an older pet will be higher because the risk of developing disease is increased.

Some companies don't cover older pets unless you purchased the policy at a younger age and the coverage is continuing.

For these reasons, it's important to get pet insurance when your pet is younger and also because no company covers pre-existing conditions. So, buy a policy when your pet is young - preferably when a puppy or kitten to avoid this situation.
